What We’ve Been Working On: Understanding the Journey to Mental Health Care
Sharing Stories is a project created by Stories Without Borders and funded by the Colorado Health Foundation. The goal of the project is to reduce stigma around accessing mental health care by sharing the stories of Coloradans who have reached out for help and support.
As a subcontractor on the grant, CRA held a series of focus groups with Coloradans in treatment for mental health and another series with members of the public. The goal of the former was to understand the journey to treatment and the range of experiences within our state. The goal of the latter was to understand public perceptions of mental health and how people would seek treatment if they thought they or someone they knew needed it.
The findings from the focus groups included an analysis of the gap between perceived and lived experience, a patient journey map of the road to treatment, and identification of the most effective messages and messengers to reach Coloradans living with mental health issues. Together, these findings will guide the development of a series of videos and PSAs created by people with lived experience under the guidance of the Sharing Stories team.
We’ll let you know when they’re released later this year so you can see the final product!
